Friends of the Pomona Fox, in association with the Pomona Fox Theater, is pleased to announce the first film program at the Pomona Fox Theater. We will be screening the classic 1939 film, The Wizard of Oz, starring Judy Garland, Ray Bolger, Jack Haley, Bert Lahr, and Frank Morgan. Directed by Victor Fleming, Oz is one of the best loved films of all time at 2:00 pm on March 28. The price, still being determined, will be nominal and will allow many in the community a rare opportunity to visit the fully-restored theater. Come early and in addition to the screening, visitors will be able to take a tour of the theater lead by our own volunteer docents.

David Allen, columnist for the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin, wrote in an article about Oz and the Fox and its special association with the Pomona Fox Theater, "By the time the movie was previewed in Pomona, it was slimmed down to 112 minutes. . . . After the Pomona preview, producer Mervyn LeRoy cut a reprise of Dorothy's Over the Rainbow, sung as she sobbed in the witch's castle. Also chopped: a scene in which the Tin Man was turned into a human beehive by the Wicked Witch, an Emerald City reprise of Ding Dong the Witch is Dead, two Kansas scenes with the charater Hickory building a contraption to ward off tornadoes and multiple threatening lines from the quite-scary-enough-thank-you Wicked Witch. The movie ended up at 101 minutes by its final preview screening in San Luis Obispo and stayed that way. After an unspecified preview screening, likely Pomona's, MGM executives wanted to drop the song Over the Rainbow - gasp! - under the reasoning that it slowed the movie down and that Judy Garland, a rising star, shouldn't be singing in - oh, the ignominy - a barnyard. But LeRoy and songwriter Harold Arlen fought to keep the song in, and won."

There will be popcorn, soft drinks, candy, available and well as selected hot foods and "adult" beverages
